Heino Eller (1887–1970) is a renowned figure in Estonian music. His life unifies Estonian folk culture from its inception to today – during his long lifetime he encountered many Estonian cultural figures from Karl August Hermann to Lepo Sumera. Eller’s original and diverse oeuvre laid the the foundation for high quality Estonian instrumental music. During his 50-year-long educational career, he trained whole generations of Estonian composers, incl. Eduard Tubin, Arvo Pärt and Jaan Rääts. With his “Home Melody” Heino Eller managed to discover the point where the art of music joins patriotism and in the 1950s to 1960s he became an acknowledged national classic. In the 1930s, however, Eller was known as the leading modernist in Estonia, with his complex musical language that occasionally bewildered even other musicians. The gala concert dedicated to Eller’s 130th birthday will be exemplifying these two interweaving aspects of Eller’s life and creation – modernism and patriotism.
